Stories have been told throughout history since the time of cave men. Over the centuries, this has evolved into modern cinema, television, and even video games - but some of the most well known fables and fairy tales have endured and are still told today. Myths & Monsters is a 6-part documentary that chronicles the origin of some of the best known stories in Western culture.

The episodes begin with a well crafted introduction that gives a brief overview on the content of the documentary before diving into the meat of the series. This opening episode, dubbed Heroes & Villains, introduces the Hero’s Journey template as depicted in the book The Hero With A Thousand Faces and explains how each story is crafted around this and explores the ones that defy this template.

We will watch the first 2 episodes together and then have time for discussion.

ABOUT THE FACILITATOR:

Adina Davidson, Ph.D., LISW is in her final year of Jungian analytic training. She is in private practice in Cleveland Heights and Beachwood and serves as an Adjunct Professor at the Cleveland Institute of Art.

Jung at the Movies: "Inside Out" as a Psychological Journey

Description:

The blockbuster 2015 animated Pixar film Inside Out offers an accessible and heart-felt inroad into basic constructs of Jungian psychology. The movie tells the story of Riley, an 11 year-old girl whose family is moving from Minnesota to San Francisco. The film dramatizes Riley’s internal struggles with Fear, Anger, Disgust, Sadness, and Joy. Inside Out is a psychological speed date; psychotherapy in a nutshell. Please join us for a viewing of the film followed by discussion.

About Wainer:

Jody Wainer is a Licensed Independent Social Worker and a Jungian analyst. She has been in private practice since 1996. She is the past president of Jung Cleveland. Ms. Wainer is interested in increasing the visibility and understanding of Jungian thought and the support it can offer to our lives.

Description:

This 1990 documentary film features footage of interviews with Carl Jung himself.  The film, therefore, is helpful in providing an up close and personal sense of this renowned pioneer in the field of Depth Psychology.  In "The World Within", Jung speaks about various aspects of his approach to understanding thePsyche including working with dreams, imaginal figures, and the importance of ritual and fantasy.  The film provides a glimpse into Jung's Red Book, the diary in which he recorded his dreams and imaginal life which he cites as leading to the development of his Psychological Theory. The film also provides footage of 

Jung at Bollingen, a stone structure built by Jung which served as a private space for reading, writing, and contemplation.  Of this structure, Jung is quoted as saying: "At Bollingen, I am in the midst of my true life, I am most deeply myself".   

About the Moderators:

John Troyer, MA, PCC received an MA in Counseling and Human Development from Walsh University.  Troyer completed a 2 year clinical training program in Jungian Psychotherapy at the C. G. Jung Institute of Chicago.  He is currently in private practice in Akron, Ohio. 

David Palomo, MA, EdS holds an MA in Counseling Psychology from Pacifica Graduate Institute.  A former member of the board of Jung Cleveland, he is the Director of Music Together Summit where he works with the emerging of archetypal processes in young children through the medium of music.

Our monthly Wednesday programs include the continuation of a three-part series, The Wisdom of the Dream. The second part of the series,Inheritance of Dreams, focuses on Carl Jung’s conception of archetypes — the stories and symbols that are shared by different cultures and that make up the Collective Unconscious. During this segment, Jungian Analyst Dr. John Beebe, M.D., identifies archetypes in science-fiction films such as Star Wars®, and the video features rare footage tracing Jung’s travels to Africa, Britain and New Mexico.

The segment will include a moderated discussion with the Rev. Daniel Budd.

About Budd:

Rev. Daniel E. Budd has been Parish Minister since August 1999. He was ordained in 1979, and from 1979 to 1984 he served Unitarian Universalist congregations in Hartland Four Corners, Vermont, and then in Midland, Texas; from 1984 to 1999 he served the Unitarian Universalist Church of Buffalo, New York.

Rev. Budd holds a B.A. in Psychology from Otterbein College (1973) and a Master of Divinity from Eden Theological Seminary (1979). He currently serves on the Community Leader’s Council/Greater Cleveland of Planned Parenthood of Northeast Ohio, the Delegate Assembly for Greater Cleveland Congregations, and on the Board and Program Committee of the C.G. Jung Educational Center of Cleveland.
