Folktales have been shared across the globe for millennia. These powerful and timeless stories capture and affect the hearts and imaginations of listeners. Folktales are symbolic stories that reveal the archetypal aspects of human existence.
Rumpelstiltskin tells the story of a young girl’s desperate situation. To save her life, the girl promises to give her first child to the gnome who rescues her. In studying the tale, we will explore how the girl becomes trapped, how she is rescued, and how she regains her child and her life. As we seek to understand our encounter with dilemmas in our lives, we will learn the importance of “naming” the challenges we face. Similarly, we can grow to regain autonomy.
Rumpelstiltskin is the gnome who both helps and hinders; whose power we must appreciate and overcome; who will enslave us unless we passionately seek to know it, name it and thereby reclaim our vitality.
