Secrets of the Philosopher’s Stone: Exploring Alchemical Texts at the Cleveland Public Library

  • Cleveland Public Library 325 Superior Avenue Cleveland, OH, 44114 United States (map)

Carl Jung’s home in Küsnacht, Switzerland housed a vast library filled with thick, dusty tomes on alchemy. These ancient texts deeply informed Jung’s work, and the symbolism of alchemy continues to resonate with Jungian analysts, scholars, and students alike.

On Saturday, November 1 at 3:00 p.m., join members and friends of Jung Cleveland for an immersive journey into this symbolic tradition.

Forrest Kilb, a Jung enthusiast and staff member at the Cleveland Public Library, will guide us through special sections of the library, highlighting rare and early alchemical texts from its archives — including volumes referenced by Jung and other Jungian thinkers. Along the way, Forrest will also share insights into the building’s remarkable architecture. The library's original structure, built in 1925, provides a fitting atmosphere for our exploration.

As many of you know, the strange and sometimes cryptic imagery found in alchemical literature held great importance for Jung. These symbols often mirror dream content and reflect deep movements of the psyche — even pointing toward the process of individuation.

After the tour, we will gather to choose an image that speaks to us, reflect on it through journaling, and engage in a group discussion about the personal and symbolic meanings that emerge.
